Garden Diaries – Part 3: Updates + Transplanting

June 30, 2020 at 10:00AM

Start here… PART 1: Growing Seedlings PART 2: Building Raised Beds It’s been almost two months since my last garden update and wow do I have a lot to update you on! It’s funny because very little has actually happened with the garden (still no veggie or fruit production yet!) but the amount I have learned makes up for that. Definitely a newbie gardener here! Which I hope can serve as a reminder that these posts are meant to be written from that perspective – I generally have very little idea what I am doing! As I mentioned in my first Garden Diary post, my desire to start a garden led me down a rabbit hole of expert gardeners giving advice that felt FAR beyond anything I could comprehend. Which is why I decided to share this series – I wanted a place that documented learnings + experiments in gardening from someone who has never actually kept a garden before. So it should come as no surprise that I’ve learned a lot over these past few months and have had a couple pretty epic failures. Fortunately these set-backs haven’t put me off gardening. If anything it’s made me want to […]

Grilled Kale Caesar Salad with Spicy Shrimp

June 29, 2020 at 10:00AM

Spice things up this summer with this grilled kale caesar salad with spicy shrimp. Boring old kale gets a makeover in this flavorful and filling summer salad recipe. I’ll be honest, cooking in the summer is probably my least favorite cooking season. I know, it sounds counterintuitive since summer is when all the fresh produce comes to life and there’s so much variety. But I also find my cooking methods become a lot less interesting in the summer. I pretty much only want to eat salads and grill food. This obviously isn’t the worst thing in the world, but when you’re a recipe developer, coming up with fresh, seasonal, summer meals becomes a little limited. I mean there’s only so many ways you can eat a salad…right?! So I’ve taken it upon myself to keep things interesting this summer by combining my two favorite cooking methods: raw + grilled. Grilled salad! I think a lot of people have heard of grilled romaine, but did you know you can grill kale? I shared a grilled kale salad a couple of years ago but I wanted to share another variation of grilled kale caesar salad using my favorite greek yogurt caesar dressing. […]

Is Retinol Clean Beauty?

June 26, 2020 at 10:00AM

Is retinol clean beauty? We’re exploring what retinol is, how to use it and if retinol technically qualifies as clean beauty. TABLE OF CONTENTS What is Retinol? Is retinol-based skin care safe? What does retinol do? Precautions and Side Effects of Retinol How long does it take to see results? When to Apply Retinol in Your Skincare Routine How is Marie Veronique’s Gentle Retinol Serum different from conventional retinoid products on the market? The Best Clean Retinol Products Natural Alternatives to Retinol The Results! Before + After My first introduction to retinol was 6 years ago when I walked into my doctor’s office begging for something to help with my cystic acne. Up until that point (age 25) I had never dealt with acne. Sure the occasional zit but the skin gods had my back through my teenage years and early adulthood. Then everything changed. At 24 I switched birth controls (we can talk about my horrible experience with the Mirena IUD another day) and then switched off hormonal birth control entirely. And my skin freaked out. I assumed it was triggered by the IUD and then when I came off of it my acne would go away, but it […]

Cilantro Lime Tofu Bowls

June 25, 2020 at 10:00AM

An easy and simple vegan recipe for tofu bowls with rice and a zesty cilantro lime sauce. These cilantro lime tofu bowls come together quickly for a full meal-in-one that everyone will enjoy! I’m a big believer that all people are capable of change. How do I know this? Because I used to hate cilantro…and now I love it. I know, I know there’s probably a lot of other convincing facts that would lead one to believe that we can all change but this is the one I’m going with. Because despite the commonly held belief that not liking cilantro is a genetic thing, I am case in point that you can beat even your own genes. I don’t really know when it happened either. I’m pretty sure somewhere in the deep archives of THM you’ll find a blog post where I vilify cilantro, but somewhere along the way I just got tired of hating it. I try not to be a fussy eater and hate having to waste something because I’m not into the taste. It seemed easier to learn to enjoy cilantro than worry about it being sneakily added. And now, I’m kind of obsessed. It has officially […]
