In a press release, PetSmart said it would offer delivery service from more than 1,400 of its store locations nationwide. The company will accomplish that through DoorDash Drive, which offers “direct delivery for any business.”
PetSmart stores will also be able to provide same-day delivery. As the release states: “Shoppers can place their orders for same-day delivery on PetSmart.com now and via the PetSmart mobile app later this week.”
“We understand that our customers need many different shopping options during this time, so ensuring they can make those purchases however they need [to] is important to us,” said Will Smith, PetSmart senior vice president and chief marketing officer. He added that PetSmart is pleased to provide customers “with an even more accessible shopping experience.”
“The pandemic has pulled the future forward for retail, where changes that once might have taken three years have instead happened in three months,” said Casey North, vice president of DoorDash Drive. “We’re thrilled to partner with PetSmart, marking our entry into the pet retail space.”
PetSmart offers thousands of products online, “from pet food, toys and treats to Halloween costumes, habitats and supplements.” The company also offers such services as training, grooming, boarding, Doggie Day Camp and in-store pet adoptions.
DoorDash describes itself as “a technology company that connects customers with their favorite local and national businesses in more than 4,000 cities and all 50 states across the United States, Canada and Australia.”
The pair’s new delivery service faces a competitive market. PYMNTS research found that Amazon managed over $1 billion in pet food sales in 2018, a 20 percent year-on-year increase from 2017. At the same time, Walmart has been adding more pet products to its offerings.
Back in 2017, PetSmart boosted its digital business through its $3.35 billion acquisition of Chewy, an online retailer of pet food and products.
